Troubleshooting • Pi 5 not booting: 0 long flashes with 2 short flashes?

Looking for guidance on how to troubleshoot. I strongly suspect I'm missing something very basic that this community can point out.

I already plan to
1) try different power cords
2) get a microHDMI cable
but I won't get those for a couple of days. In the meantime, is there anything else I can do to troubleshoot?

Here's what's happening:

- installed Raspberry Pi OS 64-bit via Raspberry Pi Imager v1.9.0 on an external ssd
- plugged in ssd to RPI
- plugged in Nintendo Switch power cord to RPI
- green light came on
- after a minute or so the green light turns off for a second or two, then shows 2 short flashes, turns off for another second or two, then turns on again for about a minute. This process seems to repeat indefinitely. It looks to me like 0 long flashes and 2 short flashes, but that doesn't exist in [LED warning flash codes](https://www.raspberrypi.com/documentati ... lash-codes)

I have no micro HDMI cable to use so I can't connect the RPI to a monitor. I am doing two things to confirm whether it's booting or not
1. `ping raspberrypi.local`
2. I check my router (I entered the wifi credentials in Raspberry Pi Imager) to see if an extra device connects
Neither of those methods ever indicate that the RPI is connected to the router, which I assume means it hasn't successfully booted.

I've done my best to search the forums and the broader internet but can't find anything.
