Beginners • Headless Pi 5

I want to connect Pi 5 to laptop with ethernet cable. anyone know of a good link or can any one help.

I watched many You tube videos and they say to change IP Address of both Pi and laptop to static. Question, if I am hooking up directly to cable, why do I need a IP address at all.
